It is disingenuous at best and outright deceit at worst. Without getting into the rabbit hole of micro-transactions, free-to-play and traditional purchase methods, it is unfair to me (the customer) if Blizzard were to introduce a micro-transactions/free-to-play heavy nature into this game because that isn't the model of the game I bought/they sold me. In this case that means a business model like the one I purchased when I first bought the game. So no, I wouldn't expect a car dealer to put a new snowflake spoiler on my car but I would expect them to maintain our original agreement. Blizzard's business model is hardly new and the idea of upfront cost, long-term bug fixes/patches/etc. Next, there are problems, unfortunately, your analogies, as is often the case, they don't make a truly accurate comparison. Any product be it video game, cars, cell phones or what have you would inevitably collapse under negative customer experience it's happened a hundred times before and it will, of course, happen again. It is wildly not in their own best interest to just ignore the requests of their customers and proceed to do whatever the hell they want.

Your claim is terribly short-sighted and frankly dumb. Your initial claim is correct, they are under no direct obligation to introduce anything else for free and I imagine they wouldn't if not for the convention of content development and release that is prevalent in both Diablo and PC Gaming.
